Chatham Township, located near New Jersey’s Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, is an affluent community of 11,000 people. There were not any violent crimes reported in Chatham in 2016, and of the 49 total crimes reported, 39 were instances of petty theft. Such statistics make Chatham’s overall crime rate 81% lower than the national average, and give Chatham residents a 0.5% chance of becoming victim to a crime.
